| Tutor: | Echo Haronga | | | Rating: | (What's this?) | | Gender: | Female | | Location: | Wellington - Wellington City | | Price Range: | $30-40 per hour | | Education Level: | Bachelor Degree | | Institute: | Victoria University of Wellington | | Major: | Double degree in Law and History | | Subject: | History | Level: | University(Year 3) | | Subject: | English | Level: | Secondary(Form 6-7) | | Subject: | Art history/classics | Level: | Secondary(Form 6-7) |
| Tutoring Experience: I have tutoring experience in a range of topics at all levels. I tutored my first student in NCEA Level Two and Level Three subjects including English, History and Journalism, with an emphasis on having fun with the subject, as well as exam technique and essay skills. His grade level changed markedly during our sessions from mostly Not Achieved in practice/homework essays for History and English to Merits in exam or mock exam situations. He also received Scholarship for History in the 2009 exam. I took on a student for six weeks leading up to the 2009 exams and she also achieved highly in her level 3 exams. I have other experience marking students essays and providing feedback in my nominated subjects either online or in person.
During my own NCEA Levels 1, 2, 3 and scholarship, I tutored my peers in an organised but informal service, and I similarly help my peers at university on a regular basis with their essays. | Description: I am in my fourth year, and currently studying to complete a BA in History and a Bachelor of Law at Victoria University.
While I have no formal tutoring qualifications, I achieved hgihly throughout my time at high school, and gained 80 excellence credits in NCEA Level Three across History, English, Te Reo Maori, Art History and Classical Studies, as well as scholarship in History and Art History in 2006.
I have no current students (as they all moved on to university in 2010), but in an hour tutorial I would generally follow a programme of goalsetting with the student, the student's parents, and I continually reflect on the progress of these goals. My tutorials are made up of around 40% discussion of material and 60% application of material in answering NCEA questions. However, I also refresh basic exam technique, preparation and study skills with the student and build on these skills to enhance exam performance.
I communicate ideas easily and have seen in the progress of the student that I currently tutor that my skills learnt in NCEA are of value to students either struggling with passing or striving to gain excellence grades.
I believe that my age (21) is suitable to students who perhaps aren't eager on having an older, "boring adult" tutor. It has only been a few years since I sat NCEA myself, and I find that this lets me connect easily with students on a personal level; as well as having the advantage of remembering how NCEA works through my own recent experience. | | |
