I have taught all levels taught from primary to adults. I worked for 18 months in Universities.
I hold a TESOL certificate which I got in Auckland. I specialised in teaching adults and English for Academic Purposes. While in China I spent a year preparing students for the IELTS exams. All of my students are now studying abroad.
I think that textbooks can be used as a guide but not as the only method of learning. I believe that learning how to use the English Language naturally and in everyday conversation is the most important thing. During a tutorial much of the time will be spent using the language rather than doing excercises and reading from books. Music and newspapers are also great tools to use when learning a language. This will help you to speak more naturally and listen more effectively.
I am quite flexible as to group size or individual lessons and where we hold our tutorials. This can be discussed further once we meet.
I look forward to hearing from you and hope that I can help make your english language learning fun and interesting as well as useful.

| Tutoring Experience: Experience tutoring CELS191, HUBS191, PHSI191, CHEM191 and HEAL192 privately. Also tutored PHSI191 and HEAL192 at a residential college. | Description: Are you or your child enrolled for health science first year (HSFY) at Otago in 2011, and perhaps aiming for a course like medicine?
Feeling a bit ill-prepared for HSFY, because you haven't done one of the sciences at high school? I can help by bringing you up to scratch on the basics you will need for HSFY.
Have you been receiving conflicting or confusing information about the HSFY course, and/or have some questions you'd really want answered? I'm here to share my experiences and to answer your questions as best as I can.
Are you looking to get ahead this summer and prepare yourself for HSFY? I have an intimate knowledge of the course structure, syllabus, how assessment works, study methods, UMAT, what it's like to live and study in Dunedin, how selection for professional courses work, and more.
If any of this sounds like you, feel free to contact me so we can discuss things further. I'll be available in Nelson over part of the summer.
About me: I am a 3rd year medical student who completed the HSFY course in 2008 with a 98% average. I've stayed at a residential college for 2 years too, so I am very familiar with the hall environment. I'm experienced in giving private tutoring, and also have provided advice for many students in relation to the HSFY course.

I can tutor to higher stages in these subjects, and other subjects as well, but would want to first discuss with a student what their expectations of me are. I can provide resources for some subjects. I am articulate, and will work to find a tutoring approach that "fits" the student.
I am experienced in tutoring University subjects, and received top feedback from students I tutored in the Department of Political Studies at Auckland University. Sample feedback includes:
"(James) was really clear, and explained everything well, the handouts were useful."
"(James) was incredibly approachable when I had difficulty".
"Best tutor I've ever had. Tutorials were very helpful, related directly to course content. Interesting discussion, useful exercises."
"Despite the early time, I felt like it was worth getting up for tutorials. They supplemented the lectures well and I liked how we worked in groups as well as individually. Really worthwhile."
